- The Bolsheviks accept Germany's harsh terms for peace in the Brest-Litovsk Treaty. Russia loses much of its territory in the west including Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, and parts of Belarus.

- Civil war breaks out in Russia between the Reds (Bolsheviks) and the Whites (Czechoslovak soldiers)
July
- Tsar Nicholas and his family are executed in Ekaterineburg.
November
- The Whites take control of Siberia

- The White armies are finally defeated by the Bolsheviks.

- Lenin dies
- Triumvirate of Stalin, Kamanev, and Zinoviev take control

- Stalin kicks Kamanev, Zinoviev, and Trotsky (another revolutionary leader) out of the government (and eventually out of the party and even country). Stalin rules the Soviet Union as a dictator until his death in 1953.
